Topsoil

While a perfect green yard might be the end result you are looking for, topsoil is the unsung hero in the equation. Your sod needs a nice place to live and gain nutrients from. When houses are built, they scrape off all the nice topsoil to get to the bedrock where the house can be more stable. Because of this, it is vital to make sure you bring the topsoil back in so your sod can last.

Fill Dirt

As far as bulk material goes, fill dirt is as cheap as it gets. Fill dirt is a mix of dirt, rock, and dirt clods. This is used to raise your grade more than 6 inches typically. You do not put sod on top of this, sod needs topsoil. If you need to bring up your level several inches or even feet, it is recommended you do fill dirt and then the last at least 3–4 inches to do topsoil.

Gravel

Gravel is becoming more and more popular. While everyone is looking for that nice green yard, gravel is the perfect compliment to put around your yard. It is most popular to put some sort of edging around the outside of the grass. Then you put down your gravel. Gravel comes in all shapes and sizes and pricing varies a lot.
